The City of Bunbury and Koombana Bay Foreshore played host to nine days of top-notch junior beach volleyball action.
Caitlin Whincup, Cassie Dodd and Elizabeth Alchin won the Under 15 Girls’ event at the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships over the weekend.
The trio defeated fellow WA beach volleyballers Alexia Zammit, Giovana Paiva Nunes, and Harriet Jones, 21-12, 21-12, on Sunday morning.
The Under 17 Girls’ final saw Queensland’s Brianna and Kayla Mears take down WA’s Sarah Burton and Tia Chamberlain 22-20, 21-14.
On Wednesday, April 25, crowds witnessed the medal matches of the 2018 Australian U23 Beach Volleyball Championships.
Queensland pair James Takken and Mark Nicolaidis defeated WA’s Gregory Hunt and Maksim Bacovic, 16-21, 21-17, 17-15, in the men’s final.
Meanwhile, Aimee Coleman and Tiaan Smith took down fellow Queenslanders Brianna and Kayla Mears in the women’s decider, 21-6, 21-7.
Competitors faced stormy conditions during the Alcohol. Think Again Beach Tour on April 21 and 22.
Visiting Bunbury to catch the events, Commonwealth Games gold medal-winning beach volleyballer Damien Schumann was impressed by the young, talented competitors in action.
He said Bunbury provided sublime facilities and the perfect back-drop for all three tournaments.
