Epilepsy WA has launched a monthly support group in Bunbury.
The group is free and open to anyone whose life is impacted by epilepsy, whether it be as a parent, partner, family member or friend.
Epilepsy WA community coordinator Lauren Buckels said the group was formed due to a need in the region.
“We found that we were getting numerous phone calls from the Bunbury area with people seeking advice and support,” she said.
“We are happy to give that individual support but felt the best way was to have a presence in Bunbury and reach the greatest number of people we can.”
The group will be run in a peer support style, led by a facilitator representing Epilepsy WA.
Ms Buckels said support groups provided a safe space and an understanding environment.
“People don’t realise how profound an impact epilepsy can have on families,” she said.
“For 30 per cent of people, they are treatment resistant so it means they are unable to tell when and if they will have a seizure so that gives them a lot of anxiety.
“Loved ones often have trouble sleeping as they are afraid their partner or child will have a seizure.
“Things like driving restrictions can limit someones ability to engage socially or gain employment.”
The Bunbury Epilepsy Support Group will run on the first Tuesday of each month from 6.30pm at St John of God Hospital in the Conference Room.
