Equipped with enthusiasm, determination, and an acute knowledge of professional tennis players, Bunbury Tennis Club star Korbin Priestley has a deep admiration for the sport running through his veins.
At the Alexander Park and Mount Lawley Winter Silver Tournament earlier this month, the 10-year-old breezed through the competition to claim the Boys Under 10 singles title.
He and Harry Piacentini combined to create a impressive pairing, taking out the Boys U10 doubles event.
“I was surprised with how well I did and it was a pretty tough competition,” Korbin said.
Korbin then hit the court for the 2018 Perth Superstars Gold competition.
After placing second in the Boys U10 singles competition, Korbin and Thomas Bouzada took out the Boys U10 doubles championship.
Korbin then went on to clinch the Coastal Classic Gold Boys U10 Singles competition.
He and Harry had reached the Boys U10 doubles final, but the game was cancelled due to rain.
Korbin began his tennis journey at four-years-old, before going on to participate in his first tournament at seven.
The athlete later went on to secure the 2016, 2017, and 2018 CBH Group Country Tennis Championship Boys U10 singles titles.
With Bunbury Tennis Club personnel Sam Galati and Andrew Woodward’s overwhelming support, Korbin trains and plays multiple times per week.
The star now has his eye on the D’Arcy Slater event in October as well as next year’s state championships.
He said hard work and good sportsmanship were essential to the sport.
His parents, Rachel Petrie and Darryl Priestley, said they were thrilled with his achievements, skills, and willingness to improve with each session.
“It’s something he’s naturally good at and he excels at it,” Petrie said.
“He’s very trainable, takes on board what the coaches say, and doesn’t muck around on the court.”
