Acclaimed singer-songwriter Johnny Cash is universally remembered for smash hits like Ring of Fire, Walk the Line, Get Rhythm, and Riders in the Sky.
However, one particular concert gave him a reputation for being courageous and unique.
Johnny Cash – The Concert, heading to the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre on August 25, sees Australian performers Daniel Thompson and Stuie French paying tribute to the legendary musician.
The show’s 2018 tour covers 32 dates, hopping from one destination to the next.
Thompson and French will visit Perth’s Astor Theatre on August 24 and Mandurah’s Performing Arts Centre on the 26th.
“I am looking forward to getting back to the South West, it’s such a nice part of the world and I am excited to get out there and play some songs,” Thompson said.
“Playing for two hours on stage in front of an audience is a really amazing experience and it is something I really love.
“Watching the way people react to these songs is great because the Johnny Cash catalogue is such a big body of music.”
The duo’s show revisits the songs made famous by Cash’s concert at Folsom State Prison on January 13, 1968.
Along with renditions of tracks from the At Folsom Prison live album, the duo will also perform some of the singer’s biggest songs from his extensive list of records.
At Folsom Prison sold more than 3 million albums in the United States and became number 88 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
“It was an enormously significant part of his career, this album started off a period where he really became a household name,” Thompson said.
“The At San Quentin album was 12 months later and then his TV show aired in Australia and all over the world.
“This album was really the catalyst for all of that to start happening for him.”
Thompson has embodied Cash on stage since 2009, and has become the Man in Black’s premier tribute act in Australia.
He admires Cash for singing passionately about truth, life, and emotion.
“We say we ‘pay homage’ to Cash rather than saying we do an impersonation of him, we play these songs in the way we think they deserve,” he said.
“We’ve got a great band and great musicians, and we really love this music.”
