Show and Shine
A Show and Shine will be the feature of the Country Markets at the Wallsend Ground on Saturday. All vehicles are welcome, with the fee being a gold coin donation. Other features at the markets will be a macrame workshop, an Australian icon exhibition and a competition for the best dressed father and son. All the usual stalls will be there, from 8am to 12 noon.
Retired miners
The AGM for the Retired Miners will be held on Monday, September 3 at 11am at the Bowling Club. The meeting will be followed by a sausage sizzle, and members are asked to get their names in to the union office by tomorrow, for the purposes of catering. All members, old and new, are welcome, and you can bring your partners.
Tree planting
Friends of the Collie River will be holding a planting event on Saturday. Check on their Facebook for details of times and place. This event is in line with the current exhibition at the Art Gallery, Gifts from the Bush and Beach.
Monster garage sale
The 2019 Anzac Tour Group is holding a monster garage sale from 8.30am on Saturday at the Energy West Hall. There will be all sorts of items on offer, from home goods, kitchen, clothing, books, toys, games, furniture, Lego, dvds, roses and more. There will also be food on sale, bacon and egg rolls, hot chips and a sausage sizzle.
Fathers' Day
To celebrate Fathers' Day, the Railway Station is offering 20% off dad's breakfast from 8.30am to 11.30am. Bookings can be made by calling 0457 912 296. There is also a large range of unusual gifts for dad which can only be purchased at the station. They are looking for someone who can help with maintenance on the electric train set, and on-going work. If you can help, call in and talk to the friendly volunteers. More volunteers are also required to help with visitors.
Vale Gundy
I first met Les "Gundy" Carroll at the Museum with Stan Cull. Gundy was a very keen bottle collector, and donated a large proportion of the Museum's collection. He was very knowledgeable about bottles, and keen to share his knowledge. He also talked at length about the old Cabbage Tree Hotel. I wouldn't have known this even existed without his stories. He made a great contribution to the Museum, and will be missed.
Antiques
The Coalfields Museum is joining in with Festivarty this year, holding an antiques and collectors day on Saturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16. You will be able to visit the museum to have your items assessed by experts for the small fee of $5 per item, so start looking out those precious items and dust them off in readiness. Apart from any items you bring along, the only antiques on show will be the Museum's collection, and there will be no items for sale.
Night at the Museum
The programme for the Night at the Museum on Thursday, September 20, has now been finalised. There has been a few changes from the original information - the Museum will be open from 7pm to 9.30pm, there will be a $5 entry fee, and wine and cheese will be served. Bookings for the night of history, mystery and fun (and wine and cheese) can be made online at the Festivarty site.
Share the dignity
Local women are joining an effort to support those in the community who are doing it tough, by donating sanitary items to be distributed locally. If you would like to help out, tampons or napkins can be left at collection centres including the library or a number of shopping outlets. Organisers ask that the packets be entire and unopened please.
