With help from Edith Cowan University – South West PhD students, the City of Bunbury, Dolphin Discovery Centre, and South West Development Commission have worked towards making the Koombana Foreshore more accessible.
Edith Cowan’s Adam Johnson, along with research partners Paul D’Vorak and Josef Bandera, discussed the foreshore’s accessibility for people with disabilities on Wednesday, August 29.
The group talked about the ramps leading towards the beach as well as the shaded areas, kiosk, toilets/amenities, barbecue areas, and playground.
The site visit and review was initially set up by the Bunbury Development Committee, striving to help turn Bunbury into Western Australia’s ‘second city’.
Bunbury Development Commission chair Robyn Fenech said inclusivity was important to the groups involved in the review.
“Being able to review the accessibility outcomes of the award-winning Koombana Bay redevelopment with the advice of local advocates is an important part of the Transforming Bunbury’s Waterfront process,” she said.
City of Bunbury Deputy Mayor Jaysen Miguel said accessibility was a high priority for staff members and officers.
“It is very important to get a perspective and to find some people who have done some research on this topic,” he said.
“Getting people to enjoy the infrastructure and projects built for the entire community is very important.”
