Bunbury’s Kyra Yuill recently celebrated becoming the first person in West Australian racing history to win as a dual-licensed jockey and trainer.

She hit Belmont Park Racecourse on Wednesday, September 12 eager to bring home the 1400-metre Tabtouch – Better Your Bet Maiden’s $9,735 first prize.
She and bay gelding Scooter’s Machine ($6.50) launched from the stall in first, and maintained their position past the 800m mark and the turn.

With victory firmly in their sights, Yuill and Scooter’s Machine crossed the line a long neck ahead of Fair Joy ($5) and two-and-a-half lengths in front of race favourite Perceive ($3.50), ridden and trained by Steve and Neville Parnham respectively.
“I was left alone in front, which I was pretty happy with,” she said.
“At the top of the straight I was pretty confident but a race doesn’t finish until you’ve crossed the finish line.
“100 metres from home, I thought the second-placed horse had me covered but Scooter’s Machine just put his head down and kept trying.”
Yuill said she and Scooter’s Machine have made for a great pairing.
“He’s a horse I don’t have to work a lot once he’s fit,” she said.
“I was just about ready to finish him earlier this year, but mum and dad wanted me to give him another run.”
“It’s fantastic to be able to have the opportunity to train and ride.
“I have really enjoyed riding my own horse.”
