Squash players from Bunbury and Leschenault achieved sparkling results in this year’s Country Week tournament.
Six teams, comprised of players from Bunbury Squash Club and Leschenault Squash Club, headed to Mirrabooka Squashworld over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, ready to topple teams from around the state.
Three of the Bunbury/Leschenault teams made it through to the finals, before the Men’s C-Grade and Men’s H-Grade sides were taken down.
Going undefeated throughout the tournament, Caillin Blackwood, Brad Grinter, Jamie Herring, and Dean Reynolds reached the end and brought the 2018 Men’s A-Grade title back to the South West.
There has been a resurgence in country squash over the past few years, so much so there are teams flying in from as far north as Broome and as far south as Esperance.

The squad broke a seven-year drought by taking down Mandurah in the decider.
“We’d lost the last two finals so we didn’t want to lose three in a row,” A-Grade team captain Jamie Herring said.
“It’s been 18 years since I first made an A-Grade final – and I had never won one before – so the win felt fantastic.
“It was probably the strongest team we could take, so it made for a really good time for Bunbury squash.”
Mr Herring said the tournament has greatly benefited from a gradual increase in regional squash players.
“Overall, six more teams went this year compared to last year,” he said.
“There has been a resurgence in country squash over the past few years, so much so there are teams flying in from as far north as Broome and as far south as Esperance."
Herring and fellow Bunbury Squash Club member Jess Meek were picked for the 2018 Country State Representative side by the WA Squash Country Council.
