Donnybrook District High School has entered three teams to build their own electric vehicles and enter them into the 2018 EV Challenge powered by Synergy, at the end of this month.
The event will be held on Saturday, October 27 at the Hurricane Go Kart Club at Wundowie, north-east of Perth.
The EV Challenge powered by Synergy is Australia's longest running electric motorsport competition, which was first established in 2001.
Donnybrook District High School design and technology teacher and engineering trainer Len Strother said last year they placed third and fourth.
“The high school has a proud tradition in the state event, having won the open division twice and the a division on three occasions,” he said
This year 42 entrants will take part in the event, with the aim of designing, building, and racing a small single seat electric vehicle.
Powered by a limited capacity battery and built to a restricted budget, teams try and complete as many laps of a closed course as possible in one hour.
The challenge is one of Australia's premier Science Technology Engineering and Maths education competitions, encouraging innovative engineering in a competitive and stimulating arena.
Students and teachers will work together to build their own prototype EVs, with some schools offering participating students credit for being involved in the event.
Synergy chief executive officer Jason Waters said he was pleased Synergy was sponsoring the event for a second year.
“We are once again thrilled to be the main sponsor of the EV Challenge and it’s great to see students and teachers working together to design and build their own electric vehicles,” Mr Waters said.
“The challenge is a great way to foster the understanding of future technology, like EVs, as well as managing the use of electricity in innovative ways.”
Those who head to the EV challenge will also be given the unique opportunity to pedal one of four bikes at on Synergy Race Track Rally trailer, which will then power mini EVs on a make-shift race track.
