The 17 women co-owners of Chix Pic celebrated after scoring the $59,000 first prize in the 1000-metre TABTouch 3yo Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Overcast conditions failed to halt punters and racing fans from heading to Bunbury Turf Club for the 2018/19 season opener on October 13.
The crowd was delighted as trainers Daniel and Ben Pearce’s Agent Pippa ($11) left the barrier in front during the $100,000 main event.
Things looked promising as Agent Pippa and jockey Jordan Turner held the lead past the turn.
The bay filly slipped to fifth on the home straight, as Chix Pic ($18) and rider Joseph Azzopardi moved up from second to first.
The contingent of co-owners, along with trainer David Harrison, were thrilled after Chix Pic crossed the line a full length ahead of race favourite Black Sabbath ($2.30) and Lady Cosmology ($2.50).
Having taken out last year’s TABTouch Classic on Ocean Jewel, Azzopardi made it back-to-back victories.
Overwhelmed with glee, co-owner Carol Holly thanked Mr Harrison, her fellow co-owners, and Bunbury Turf Club during the trophy presentation.
Trainer Gary Crispin and rider Jason Whiting were over the moon after Multiverse ($9) moved from third at the turn to take out the Amelia Park 3yo+ Handicap.
The chestnut gelding looked to be in trouble after settling fifth, but picked up steam close to the turn.
Whiting and Multiverse finished just a short-head in front of Sweet Dreamin’ ($19), and three-quarters-of-a-length ahead of Royal Command ($3.60) and Snow Blossom ($21).
Big Caroline ($10) and rider Mitchell Pateman put in an extraordinary effort on the home straight to secure the 1100m JCW Electrical Handicap event.
As Khan ($21) fizzled out close to the line, Big Caroline shifted out of fifth place before finishing three-quarters-of-a-length ahead of Pretentious Chant ($31).
Earlier in the day, jockey Lucy Warwick pushed Noir De Rue ($4) over 2000m to claim the Prince of Wales 3yo+ Handicap.
After settling in eighth place, Lucy Warwick and the bay gelding struggled to move up the field.
The pair held their position past the 800m mark and the final turn, giving Warwick the motivation to sweep the competition on the straight.
A close affair saw Noir De Rue edge out Honorific ($5.50) by a nose, with Queen Bey one-and-a-half lengths behind.
Bunbury Turf Club will be awash in red and white during South Bunbury Football Club Race Day, featuring the Class 5 1400m event, on October 21.
