Bunbury squash player Eva French, 13, has celebrated being part of this year’s Australian Junior Championship-winning squad.
At last month’s Australian Junior Squash Championships in Darwin, Eva and her WA WASP teammates worked together to break Queensland’s 14-year stranglehold on the title.
“I honestly didn’t think we would make it to first place in the tournament,” Eva said.
“I was also quite nervous, it was only my second year at the event and none of my family were there.
“It was really good to be part of this year’s winning state team.
“We had already been through the disappointment of coming second and so we had worked really hard to come first.
“It was the first time WA had won in about 15 years.”
Eva was part of last year’s second-placed state side, and had also clinched 10th in the Individual Under 13s category.
This year’s tournament marked Eva’s first in the U15s division.
“I moved up quite a bit this year and I was happy with that,” she said.
“I had been to Darwin’s squash courts for a tournament two years prior. I knew I liked the courts there and so I was just happy to be there.
“It was nice to know that I have reached that level by working really hard.”
Earlier this year, Eva and the Southern Smashers won the teams event at the State Junior Squash Championships.
She now has her sights set on 2019, hoping to once again represent WA at next year’s National Junior Championships.
