A man who stole a trailer he had rented from Picton Trailer Hire has been ordered to pay $1563.40 in fines and court costs.
Kane Malcolm Garwood, 30, faced Bunbury Magistrates Court on October 25 over four charges of stealing.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Greg Ward told the court Garwood had rented a trailer from the Picton business on Thursday, April 12.
Garwood called Picton Trailer Hire to ask if he could borrow the trailer for another day, which the company then allowed.
On April 18, after the trailer was reported stolen, police found it in front of Garwood’s Wiluna home.
Garwood had used spray paint to cover up the two Picton Trailer Hire signs on the trailer.
The court also heard CCTV footage had captured Garwood committing fuel drive-offs.
All three incidents added up to $200 worth of stolen fuel.
Garwood’s lawyer told the court an infection forced Garwood’s right leg to be removed.
The lawyer said the amputation had caused his client severe anxiety.
The court was told Garwood’s de facto partner needed to move back to Wiluna, and had several items that required the use of a trailer.
The defence said Garwood accepted the facts and was trying to get on top of his issues.
He added his client was now living in Bunbury and in a position to pay fines.
Magistrate Belinda Coleman acknowledged that Garwood initially had good intentions, but lost his way soon after.
She agreed fines were appropriate given the situation.
Along with the fines and court costs, Garwood was forced to pay $1167.05 in compensation.
