Eleven students who call Bunbury home have officially joined the ranks of the country’s educational elite after scoring more than 99 per cent on their recent Year 12 ATAR examinations.
Proving that Bunbury schools are just as good as those in Perth, the high achievers now have a mixture of plans that will see them study in Perth, over-east and even abroad in fields of science and medicine.
Bunbury Catholic College had two students join the 99 club with Trinity Mangano and Allegra Mazza-Parton.
The girls have been friends since primary school both attending Our Lady of Lourdes in Dardanup.
Trinity said it was rewarding to know all the hard work had paid off and credited much of her to success to maintaining a flexibile thorough study timetable and time spent at Earth and Environmental Science Olympiad Summer School earlier this year.
For Bunbury Senior High School it was the cherry on top of a great year after celebrating 100 years in education.
Principal Craige Pettit said he was “stoked” being that it was the first time since 2008 that three students, Cleye Jensen, Zeke Tinley and Simona Uychytilova had achieved 99 and above.
For Zeke his score of 99.25 was the final puzzle piece to being awarded the coveted University of Western Australia Fogarty scholarship.
He said he was very happy to get both pieces of good news and hopes to study medicine in 2019
Simona plans to work for six months before travelling through Europe and has her sights studying in Netherlands.
Manea Senior College also had three students make it above 99 per cent – Jordan Walker, Cyril Harkin and Caitlin Lucas.
Originally from Ireland, Cyril said he had been pleasantly surprised and had always enjoyed learning.
“It felt really good, the number popped up and I was shaking, I was really happy,” he said.
Cyril also plans to study medicine either at Curtin University or inter-state.
“I’ve wanted to study medicine for as long as I can remember,” he said.
“There are a few doctors in the family, so I think that’s given me exposure to what it will be like.”
Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School students excelled with Jamie McGregor and Jessica Clarke in the top one per cent with another twelve students receiving an ATAR of 95 and above.
Head of school Michael Giles said the results were a product of a close-knit peer group, supportive parents, excellent teachers and lots of hard work.
Australind Senior High School’s dux Geoffrey Saunders also made the list.
