Around West Arthur: Funds help flying doctor

Thanks to all those who came along to the Neighbourhood Centre Week Games Night at the West Arthur Community Resource Centre on Friday, May 10.

The games night was a rip-roaring success, with 25 participants trying out some great new board games and card games.

The catering by Rarebits on Burrowes Café was also a highlight of the night, made possible thanks to a grant for Neighbourhood Centre Week, supported by Linkwest and Lotterywest.

Feral Pig Control Sundowner:

It's time to get serious about feral pigs in West Arthur. Residents are invited to be part of a co-ordinated and resourced effort across shires to reduce the impacts of feral pigs with the break of season.

Join the Blackwood Biosecurity Group for a Sundowner in Darkan on Friday, May 31, and meet the Feral Pig Field Operators.

Cryptic Crosswords Explained:

Come along to an introductory session on the basics of cryptic crosswords in an informal group setting suitable for beginners at 10am on Monday, May 27, in the Hawthorn Room at the West Arthur Community Resource Centre. West Arthur Council Elections:

Local government elections are held on the third Saturday in October every two years, with the next due to be held on October 19, 2019. Nominations for council open on September 5 and close on September 12, 2019. This year, there will be three vacancies for a term of four years. The electoral roll will close at 5.00pm on August 30, 2019.

All electors should check that their enrolment details are up to date via the Western Australian Electoral Commission's website at www.elections.wa.gov.au

People who own or occupy property in the shire and are not on the State Electoral Roll may still be eligible to be on the Owners and Occupiers Roll and, therefore, nominate for council and vote.

To check your eligibility, please contact the shire office prior to August 30, 2019.

If you are interested in standing for council, you may wish to attend a council meeting as an invited guest.

Oppy Shop Notes:

The Oppy Shop managed to raise $500 in the month of April for The Royal Flying Doctor Service.

May sales will be donated to Multiple Sclerosis WA.

The Oppy Shop is open on Tuesdays during the school term from 10am to 4pm and is next to the Roadhouse in Darkan. Remember that all proceeds go to great causes and it is good to recycle.

Bowling for Bowels:

Everyone is invited to the carpet bowls afternoon on Wednesday, June 19, at 2 pm at the West Arthur Community Resource Centre.

This event is held to promote and discuss the importance of bowel cancer screening and enjoy sending a few bowls down the carpet.

Physiotherapist, Pam Stockley, will be there to educate and entertain with her information presentation and there will also be afternoon tea thanks to funding from Cancer Council WA.
