Competition, camaraderie and excitement filled the air last weekend as 41 volleyball teams from across the state converged on the town for the 30th Annual Collie Coal Cup.

This year's tournament saw the Collie men and women's teams defending their titles, but after an electrifying competition, neither was able to reign supreme.
Despite injuries taking out two of the women's team's most experienced players, newcomers stepped up to the plate to make the team proud while the men's team finished runners up.
Collie Volleyball Association president Kyle Hulls praised the teams for their efforts and sportsmanship.
"The growth that could be seen from these players from the start of the weekend to the last game was enormous and their willingness to step into unfamiliar territory was great to see," he said.
"From spectator comments, the grand final was an amazing game of volleyball to watch with both teams performing well.
"The teams were evenly matched with impressive spiking and numerous diving saves with some great rallies."
The men's grand final match was tied at one set apiece and the lead changed multiple times in the deciding set. Unfortunately Collie's opponents, The Margeux, proved too strong.
With fresh faces on the team, Jasmine Hulls and Tayla Van Der Kroft stepped up to mentor the women's team and kept enthusiasm high, despite a few losses.
