COLLIE Shire Council is considering building a “transit” or short-term camping and
caravan park.
“The initial feasibility report is out for public consultation now,” said Collie Shire Council's executive services manager, David Blurton.
“Council may choose to do more consultation if it is deemed necessary.”
Three sites are under consideration: Gibbs Road, Hockey Fields Minninup Pool.
The report, prepared by Q3 Architecture, favours the Gibbs Road and Hockey Field sites over Minninup Pool.
An earlier feasibility study, undertaken in 2008, identified five potential sites, three of which the council chose to investigate further.
Mr Blurton said a potential need for short-stay accommodation had been identified.
“The need was based on feedback from people seeking a camping experience in Collie rather than a full caravan park experience.”
The transit park was intended to be “an alternative product to the existing park, providing one or two-night stays and more basic camping-style accommodation”.
While it had not been decided that the council would go ahead, “the council has committed to undertaking this feasibility as a first step”, Mr Blurton said.
Final development would dependent on many factors including identifying the funding required, environmental clearances and Aboriginal heritage assessments.
“Council is committed to providing adequate visitor facilities in Collie,” Mr Blurton said.
“Council sees opportunity in the tourism market for the Collie community and this type of short-stay development would assist council and the community develop this area.”
The draft report is being advertised for public comment. It can be found on the council’s website.
The submission period closes at 4pm on Thursday, November 8.
“Council will receive these comments and determine the most suitable location,” Mr Blurton said.
“Funding will then be required to be identified and then council can commence the approval process and discussion with the relevant parties.”
When it might be built “will depend on approvals processes and availability of funding”, Mr Blurton said.
