A woman has escaped a harrowing attack after her home was burgled in the early hours of January 1.

She was found with "serious injuries" on a nature strip outside her Geelong home at 3.15am after escaping from an alleged violent intruder.

Police said a 20-year-old man broke into the woman's home in the Geelong suburb of Grovedale before assaulting and robbing her.
The man also allegedly stole the woman's car and fled the scene but crashed shortly afterwards.
Police said he crashed into a garage door in the Geelong suburb of Hamlyn Heights and was arrested at the scene.
The 35-year-old woman was taken to hospital where she is recovering from her injuries.
The man, who has no fixed address, has been charged with aggravated burglary, assault, theft, theft of motor vehicle, conduct endangering persons and handling stolen goods.
The man is due to face Geelong Magistrates Court on January 2.
