A hazmat warning was issued on Friday after a warehouse storing agricultural supplies became engulfed in flames near Kwinana Beach, in southern Perth's industrial sector.
The fire was brought under control in the afternoon, but residents in nearby suburbs were warned to remain inside with doors and windows closed and air conditioners switched off.
"A fire in a warehouse is resulting in potentially dangerous smoke blowing in a southerly direction," WA's Department of Fire and Emergency Services said in a statement.
"People should stay away from the area. If you are already in the area take advice from emergency services personnel."
The warning has been downgraded for residents north of the fire area in East Rockingham, the City of Kwinana and the City of Rockingham, and 12 firefighters remain onsite to prevent flare-ups and manage the area.
The fire reportedly started in a conveyor belt carrying sulphur from a ship to a storage facility.
West Australian firefighters have been battling bushfires along swathes of the west coast and further inland in recent days, as a heatwave drove temperatures above 42 degrees at the Jandakot weather station on Friday afternoon.
