One of Australia’s best basketballers has returned to the South West to help inspire the next generation.
Two-time olympian and Australian Boomers’ player Mark Worthington visited Bunbury last week, intent on meeting the region’s young basketballers.
After talking to City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan on July 6, the champion basketballer then led clinics at the South West Sports Centre on Saturday, July 7.
“It’s about giving back to the Bunbury Basketball Association and the place where I started my basketball career,” Worthington said.
“Hopefully, it leads to a spark, an ignition, that will light the flame of wanting to play basketball.”
He said clinics helped players across the South West and the state.
“It’s all about making sure we have a strong standing within Western Australian basketball,” he said.
“We’ve shown that we’ve produced talent. Look at someone like Tayah Burrows – she’s doing so well right now, so we want to keep producing talent like that going forward.”
After beginning his basketball career in Bunbury, Worthington debuted for the Sydney Kings in 2005.
During his National Basketball League career, he played for the Kings, South Dragons, Melbourne Tigers, Gold Coast Blaze, and Cairns Taipans.
