Renowned solo musical-comedy extraordinaire David Scheel will bring clever songs and inspired humour to Bunbury for one performance later this month.
Heading to the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre at 11am on July 25, Scheel – performing his show Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player – is looking forward to seeing the region’s many delights.
The show will mark the first event in the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre’s new morning music program.
“It’s a mixture of piano music and comedy. Some of the comedy is at the expense of music, some of it is not. It depends on who has been making the news lately,” Scheel said.
“I also play some beautiful music, and I play all the way through.”
During the production, Scheel performs two classical tunes simultaneously – one with the left hand and another with the right.
The show also pokes fun at his long-lasting career, celebrities in the spotlight, politicians in the news, and Australia.
“My send up of Waltzing Matilda has killed it for many, many thousands of people,” Scheel said.
“It’s one of the most famous tunes Australia has ever come up with, but the truth is that the lyrics are ridiculous."
Success hit Scheel overseas, when the performer was part of satirical theatre production News Revue on London’s West End.
After going out on his own, he dreamed up Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only the Piano Player.
The show went on to become a hit with young and old, with Scheel playing familiar tunes in a wholly original way.
When asked about his level of success, and the comparisons to comedians Victor Borge and Robin Williams, Scheel said he refused take any of it too seriously.
“I was pleasantly surprised at the beginning, but nowadays I take it in my stride,” he said.
“I can honestly say I have never let it go to my head and I don’t overreact to success.
“Apart from the fact I get a lot of pleasure out of it, it is also my job.”
