Bunbury Bushi Kempo Ju Jitsu is hoping its latest open day will draw more people into the wide world of martial arts.
The group will hold a free introductory training session on Sunday, October 28, from 10am to 12pm, at Bunbury PCYC, designed to give people an idea of the system.
Bunbury Bushi Kempo Ju Jitsu instructor James Sheehan said they wanted people of varying ages and skill levels to come down.
“We’ll be going through some simple self-defence techniques,” he said.
“We can show people the skills they need to not freeze in a confronting situation.”
It certainly gives you confidence as well as self-awareness, in regards to how exposed we are.

The groups trains at the PCYC on Wednesday nights, from 6.30pm to 8.15pm, with grading sessions typically held every six months.
Training sessions include warm-ups and striking techniques.
Classes feature five to seven students on average, led by Sheehan and fellow instructor Neil McLeish.
All funds raised go to towards the club.
Sheehan and McLeish said they would love to see new and current students training on a regular basis.
“Bushi Kempo covers a whole range of martial arts skills from grappling on the ground, to arm-locking and throwing, with a focus on striking as well,” Sheehan said.
“It certainly gives you confidence as well as self-awareness, in regards to how exposed we are.
“Over time, you build the resilience and skill-set to say: ‘I can manage myself purely by being aware of my environment and not placing myself in a situation which can go sideways’.
“If you are placed in that situation, however, hopefully you’ll have the skills to stop an aggressor.”
Students and instructors at Bunbury Bushi Kempo Ju Jitsu follow the system of self-defence first developed by Dave and Chris Hand in the United Kingdom.
The system has been taught in Australia since 1992.
Unlike many forms of martial arts, Bushi Kempo is not competition based and adapts to each individual.
The system uses an individual’s strength and build to their advantage, while using an attacker’s speed and momentum against them.
