The Shire of Dardanup has voted to install a Fenced Dog Exercise Area along the Eaton Foreshore.
At its meeting on Wednesday, April 17, council discussed the results of a recent community survey.
Receiving 532 submissions prior to the due date, the shire noted it was the largest response it had ever received to a consultation of this kind.
One hundred and thirty eight respondents selected Eaton Foreshore as the preferred location for the Fenced Dog Exercise Area.
Councillor Patricia Perks put forward a motion for council to receive the results and to note the support for Eaton Foreshore as the preferred location.
The motion called for the concept of a Fenced Dog Exercise Area to include "nature-based features of a successful dog park, with reference to the 'Unleashed - A Guide of Successful Dog Parks' guidelines".
It also called for the concept to be developed in consultation with the affected property owners.
Council approved the recommendation, with councillor Janice Dow voting against it.
Council will refer the designs back to the Fenced Dog Exercise Area Working Group and Eaton Townscape Committee for further consultation.
Shire of Dardanup president Mick Bennett recognised the efforts of the shire employees, councillors, and community members involved.
"We'll get the community members involved in the planning of the proposed two locations," he said.
"We need to get the planning right, so that there are no further objections."
During Wednesday's meeting, several community members expressed their concerns regarding the location.
Eaton resident Stacey Gillespie said it should not be placed in front of nearby houses.
"The eastern end is 20-30 metres in front of residences, and it's very narrow at one point," she said.
"The western end would be the better option because it's much larger."
